• “Introduction to the East Asian Collection”: This is an overview of the resources related to East Asian Studies in the Main Library and in the East Asian Collection specifically.

• “Electronic Resources in Chinese Studies”: This is Part 2 of the "Introduction to East Asian Studies." This session offers an overview and an update of the electronic databases and Internet resources available for research in Chinese Studies. New Purchases Since February 2004

In addition to the purchase of the 1994-2001 back files of the Literature/History/Philosophy series, China Academic Journals (CAJ) Database, and the current subscription of it since 2002, the I.U. Library has subscribed to its Politics/Economics/Politics series since May. The CAJ Database is the largest comprehensive online full-text and image database in China. The Politics/Economics/Law series provides full-text access to around 720 Chinese periodicals related to economics, commerce and trade, finance, insurance, politics, foreign affairs, military affairs, and law. The database can be accessed by faculty and students connected to any IUB server from the following URL: http://china.eastview.com/.

Serials Cancellations:

Here is a complete list of serial cancellations related to the East Asian Studies, which will start in January 2005. The library-wide serials review project asked for a 10% cancellation of serials for each fund. Among the selected serials, fourteen Chinese serials were cancelled because they are included in the Literature/History/Philosophy series, China Academic Journals (CAJ) Database.

Please continue to suggest to me the titles that can be transferred to ALF. So far more than 5,000 volumes of books have been selected for the remote storage facility.

Services and Changes in the Library

Space issue

The shifting project on the 8 th floor is not yet completed. The shifting was stopped from May to August because of shortage of student help in summer.The Library is aware of the problems with insufficient shelving space and with the overflow trucks being in disorder. We have been promised that the situation will be improved starting in late September when more student help is hired and trained for the project.

Quick Guide to Install East Asian Languages Support on Windows XP

This guide outlines the steps for installing East Asian languages on a computer running Windows XP so that the user can both read and write in them. Please let me know if the guidelines are clear.

• Click on Start button at the lower left corner -> click on Settings -> click on Control Panel -> click on Regional and Language options
  (For the PCs (Windows Professional XP) in the Main Library, the beginning steps are a little bit different. Go to the very lower right corner, click on Eng -> click show the language bar -> click on the little upside-down triangle mark ▼ at the very right side of the language bar , then click on settings. This will take you directly to the Text Services and Input Languages box. From then on, the steps are very similar to the ones below.)
  
• At the Regional and Language options box, select Languages at the top Click on Details
• In the Text Services and Input Languages box, click on Add next to the box of Installed Services
• Select Chinese (PRC) from the drop-down list under Input Language,
  
• Click on the Keyboard Layout / IME button, and scroll down to pick Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0(for simplified Chinese). Then click OK .
  (After you have installed Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0, you may want to fine-tune its properties. To do this, first select Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0 under Installed services in the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box by clicking on and highlighting it. Then click on Properties to bring up the Properties dialog box for Microsoft Pinyin 3.0. Experienced users will want to pick and choose their options. For new users, it is strongly recommended that the default options be left in place.)
• Or , Click on Add next to the box of Installed Services
• Click on the Keyboard Layout / IME button, and scroll down to pick Chinese (Simplified)—Quanpin (for both simplified and traditional Chinese). Then click OK.
• Or, Select Chinese ( Taiwan from the drop-down list under Input Language,
• Click on the Keyboard Layout / IME button, and scroll down to pick Chinese (Traditional)—Phonetic (for traditional Chinese). Then click OK.
• Or, Select Japanese from the drop-down list under Input Language,
• Click on the Keyboard Layout / IME button, and scroll down to pick Microsoft IME Standard 2002 ver 8.1. Then click OK.
  (The steps for installing Korean language input should be similar to those for installing Japanese and Chinese.)
• Click on Language bar settings in the lower left corner.
• At the Language bar settings box, place checks on the 1 st, 2 nd , and 3 rd boxes,
• then click OK.
• Then, click OK twice.

Once East Asian language support is installed on your PC, you can create documents in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean with most Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
