Welcome to the beginning of the fall semester and the new 2003/2004 fiscal year. Please don’t hesitate to send in purchase recommendations for the 2004 spring semester so that we can ensure timely receipt of books and periodicals. If you have any comments, feel free to contact me.

General Information

1. You are invited to the New Faculty and Graduate Student Reception, which will be held at the Reference Reading Room, 1st floor, Main Library (corner of Tenth Street and Jordan Avenue) , at 2-3:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 28. Meet the librarians, enjoy the food and drink, and join a library tour.

2. The deadline for submitting titles to the NEH Library Challenge Grant is in early October. If you have any large set in mind, let me know and we can work on recommending the titles to the NEH Library Committee.

3. I am offering the following two update sessions in the fall semester:

a. “Introduction to the East Asian Collection”: This is an overview of the resources related to East Asian Studies in the Main Library and in the East Asian Collection specifically.

b. “Electronic Resources in East Asian Studies”: This is Part 2 of the "Introduction to East Asian Studies." This session offers an overview and an update of the electronic databases and Internet resources available for researches in East Asian Studies, with focus on Chinese and Japanese Studies.

4. After meeting with the Film Studies Librarian, we have agreed to set aside $6,000 in 2003/2004 to build the East Asian Media Collection.

5.Together with the Electronic Resources Librarian, we plan to install the full-text “Index of the Chinese Cultural Revolution database” (中国文化大革命文库目录索引) CD-ROM in the library LAN.

New Purchases and Subscriptions Since May 2003

In addition to its current subscription of the Literature/History/Philosophy series, China Academic Journals (CAJ) Database, the I.U. Library recently acquired the back files of the Literature/History/Philosophy series, covering 1994-2001. The CAJ Database is the largest comprehensive online full-text and image database in China. The Literature/History/Philosophy series provides full-text access to around 450 Chinese periodicals related to literature, history, and philosophy. The database can be accessed by faculty and students connected to any IUB server from the following URL: http://china.eastview.com/

With the purchase of the 2nd series, we have the complete 47 vols. of Nihon shokuminchi bungaku seisenshu.

Services and Changes in the Library

Updates on the coin-operated copiers on campus

Effective August 15th, due to the drastic decline in using the coin-operated copiers, the rates on self-serve equipment will be changed to $0.10 for the card and $0.15 for the coin.

Information Commons (IC)

The Information Commons (IC), 1st floor of the West tower of the Main Library, is open. Overall work on the IC is 90-95 percent complete. The tentative date for 24/7 availability is August 18.

New IUCAT features

IUCAT, the online catalog of the IU Libraries that contains 5.5 million records, now includes features that allow you to:

1) Check your account and review a list of materials you have checked out
2) Renew your materials
3) Search all of the libraries on the Bloomington campus by using one keyword or exact search
